St Mary’s Quiz Night, 18th May 2019

The Friends of St Mary’s latest fundraising event, held at the Lenham Community Centre on May 18, was a resounding success, attracting 88 participants.  The questions were put together by FOSM team members Liz Cocker and Danny Coorsh, who did a fantastic job of including questions to appeal to all age groups and interests. In every quiz, the secret is finding questions that are interesting and challenging without being either too hard or too easy. Everyone agreed that Liz and Danny found a perfect balance, with questions ranging from the name of a character in a Jane Austen novel to the name of the first U.K. motorway (which turned out to be the Preston Bypass).

In addition to the five rounds of questions, quizzers were kept busy between rounds by a series of paper and picture puzzles, including a very ingenious one that asked us to identify pictures of Friends, Saints, Marys and Churches.

Question master Jason Docherty did an excellent job of keeping us all on track, repeating questions when necessary and making sure things moved along on time. A tasty meal of chicken curry or cottage pie, prepared by Sharon Naden and her team, made sure we couldn’t blame hunger for our memory lapses! Chairman Andrew Barr reported on the Friends’ current and upcoming projects and Lyn Fuller ran a very successful raffle for a splendid hamper of food and drink. We even squeezed in a game of Heads and Tails, won by Neville Plummer. The winning team each received a bottle of wine.

Grateful thanks to the hardworking team of volunteers who set up and then cleared the hall. We are happy to report that the quiz raised over £750, which will go towards repairing the stonework round the church windows. We are delighted that this, only our second FOSM quiz night, went so well. Thank you to everyone for coming and showing your support for the Friends’ efforts to help preserve our beautiful village church.
